James "Bonecrusher" Smith is a former professional boxer, born on April 3, 1953, in Magnolia, North Carolina. He is best known for becoming the first world heavyweight champion with a college degree when he defeated Tim Witherspoon in 1986 to claim the WBA heavyweight title.

Smith had a successful amateur boxing career before turning professional in 1981. He compiled a record of 19 wins, 6 losses, and 1 draw in his first 26 fights before earning a shot at the WBA title against Witherspoon.

After winning the world title, Smith defended it once against Pinklon Thomas before losing it in his second defense to Mike Tyson in 1987. He continued to fight professionally until 1999, retiring with a record of 44 wins, 17 losses, and 1 draw.

In addition to his boxing career, Smith has worked as a motivational speaker and has made appearances in films and on television. He is a member of the North Carolina Boxing Hall of Fame.
